Eight members of Upper Two, accompanied by Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Connolly, attended the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey following an invitation from the Maltese High Commission. The event celebrated the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth, with all 56 member nations represented in the presence of Their Majesties The King and Queen.
The service began and concluded with a procession featuring representatives of different faith communities, dignitaries from the UK government and other Commonwealth nations, honorary guests, and the flags of the Commonwealth. The programme included prayers, hymns, speeches, and reflections, including contributions from Oti Mabuse and Geri Halliwell-Horner.
A wide range of performances formed part of the service, including those by the Melodians Steel Orchestra, Super Grouse (a Scottish ensemble), the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Town Hall Gospel Choir, Rays of Rhythm, and students from The Royal Ballet School. Additional contributions came from poet Professor Selina Tusitala Marsh and Indigo Marshall featuring Tarju Le’Sano. These musical and dance performances celebrated the diversity and partnerships within the Commonwealth community and provided a vibrant and memorable experience.
Our distinctive school uniform and badges of achievement attracted the attention of several dignitaries. The children were fortunate to exchange smiles, waves, best wishes, and handshakes with a number of notable guests, including His Majesty The King, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, His Excellency Professor Stephen Montefort (High Commissioner of Malta to the UK), Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Oti Mabuse, and Floella Benjamin.
The children had an unforgettable day and represented the school exceptionally well. They left with a strong sense of how privileged they were to have been part of such a significant and prestigious celebration.
