ISI Inspection Report 2010............

It is with pleasure that through this website I introduce to you the values and life of the Ursuline Preparatory School.
It offers an insight into the life of our community, outlining our aims, standards and ethos. We believe that school and parents should work collaboratively for the good of the children.
However, this website is no substitute for a personal visit and I would welcome the opportunity to meet parents and their children and show them the school at work.
Above all, we are a happy and caring community that strives for excellence in all areas of school life.
I look forward to meeting you.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs P. Wilson (MSc)
HEADTEACHER

Founded in the early 1930s, the school relocated in 1994 to a large Georgian house on the outskirts of Brentwood. In 1994, the role changed and the school became an independent co-educational Catholic School for boys and girls aged 3-11 years.
The Preparatory School became independent from the Ursuline High School in 1994, although the Ursuline ethos and high traditional standards are still maintained.

Our principal aim is to provide the children with a sound Catholic, moral, social and academic education in a disciplined environment. We realise that the children learn most effectively when they are happy and well-motivated.
In order to achieve this, the school creates a happy and caring atmosphere founded on traditional values and fair discipline. We seek to establish the conditions that will allow pupils to achieve their full potential in all areas of school life. The children are also prepared, where appropriate, for scholarship examinations, Common Entrance Examinations and entry to other schools.
The school gives children the necessary competence and self-confidence to broaden and develop their individual skills and interests, both inside and outside the school environment. It also seeks to instil in pupils a sense of pride in self, school and community, to encourage concern for others, especially with the older pupils demonstrating care for the younger children. High standards in dress, speech, work and behaviour are actively promoted.
The progress of each pupil, both academic and personal, is monitored very closely. This assessment of a child’s strengths and developmental needs is made formally and informally on a regular basis. This allows the child’s teacher to develop a clear picture of the areas in which he/she is meeting with success and those in which there are still issues to be addressed. The reading age of each child is tested termly and a summary of progress in the different areas of the curriculum is produced. Parents’ Evenings are held regularly to provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss the contents of these reports and the general development and welfare of the pupil.
Above all, the Ursuline Preparatory School strives for excellence in all aspects of school life.
This week the first of the new "Behaviour Awards", were presented by Mrs Wilson. The 11 children who received them displayed exemplary behaviour, a willingness to help and excellent good manners. In order to win the certificates, the children had to be awarded 5 points for exceptional manners.

The School supports numerous charities throughout the year. These include CAFOD, Great Ormond St. Hospital for Sick Children, The Havens Hospice, The Children’s Society, Barnardo’s and the local Women’s Refuge.
The School also sponsers a poor child in Palestine and also supports fifteen children affected by the tsunami in 2005. Money for all these ventures is raised in a number of fun ways including sponsored events, a 20p coin trail and the Christmas and Easter Raffles.
Each Christmas the staff, pupils and friends of the school fill more than 180 shoe boxes with gifts for needy children in Eastern Europe. These boxes are in turn delivered by the charitable organisation Samaritan’s Purse.
The children celebrated and supported red nose day this year a little early. On Wednesday 16th March all the children came in to school wearing red clothes, wigs and of course the obligatory red nose. Every child made a donation and special assemblies were held on the day so that the childern understood why red nose day was held and what a difference the fund raising makes to the lives of others.

The Christmas Raffle was very popular with all the children who were keen to buy tickets for a chance to win one of the 52 prizes, all generously donated by Miss Welcome and her mother. The lucky winners came from throughout the school and a magnificent total of £950.66 was raised. The proceeds from the raffle are being donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital Oncology Ward. Your support as always, is very much apprecaited.
The children collected a magnificent amount of 20p coins! In total, £587.60 was raised. This sum was then divided between CAFOD and CARE (formerly known as Brentwood Catholic Childrens Society). It was a very close competition between the houses of St. David and St. Patrick as to whose line of 20p's was the longest. Eventually St. Patrick were officially declared the winners.
We are delighted to announce that a magnificent £900 was raised from the Easter Raffle. A cheque for this amount was given to Great Ormond Street Hospital and we received a lovely letter in return expressing their gratitude and explaining what a difference charitable donations such as these make. Thank you all for your generous support.
Following the terrible disaster that struck Haiti recently, the school held this event where everybody wore a hat of their choice. A tremendous £1000 was raised which has been sent directly to Sister Mary who runs an orphange in Haiti. Thank you all for your very generous support.
A fantastic total of £1,069.10 was raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. Thank you to Mrs Welcome and Miss Welcome for donating the lovely prizes. The Junior class who raised the most amount of money was Lower Two, and in the Infant and Pre-Prep Department it was Pre-Reception. Well done to them, and thank you to everyone who bought tickets to support this worthwhile cause.
On Thursday 22nd October Upper Two took to the stage in a whirl of sequins and bow ties for Strictly Come Upper Two 2009! All the boys and girls paired off to choreograph their versions of a waltz, and rehearsed for weeks leading up to the event. They performed in three groups, with the winners of each group dancing once more in the final before the champions were crowned. The rest of the school paid to watch the show, and all money raised went to the school tsunami fund. It was a brilliant effort by all concerned, and all credit should go to Upper Two for creating such an exciting competition.

The 20p coin trial took place on Manday 12th October to raise money for CAFOD. A magnificent total of £921.80 was raised, which will provide meals for over 4,500 starving children. Well done to all the children, and especially to St Patrick's house for collecting the most money.

Our principal aim is to provide the children with a sound Catholic, moral, social and academic education in a disciplined environment.
As part of the celebrations on the Feast of St. Angela (the Founder of the Ursuline Order) and St. Ursula (its Patron), we have a whole-school celebration. As a Catholic School we celebrate Masses and other services throughout the year.
These include Harvest mass when the children bring in tinned food and toiletries for those less fortunate than ourselves, St. Ursula’s day when we celebrate the foundation of our school, Mother’s day assembly when the infants put on a display for their mothers, Ash Wednesday, Reconciliation services, the Rosary in May and October, individual class prayer times and the Christingle Service of Light at the Brentwood Cathedral in which the infant classes perform the Nativity play.
As a school we are proud to maintain our links with the Cathedral throughout the year.
At Christmas we go to the Marillac to share carols and readings with the residents and staff.
The school accepts pupils of all religious denominations who support the Catholic ethos of the school.
Brentwood Cathedral provided the setting for this annual event with many people commenting that it provided the start to their celebration of Christmas. Not only was it a meaningful display of the children's and staff's commitment, dedication and hard work, but also enabled the school community to raise a substantial financial sum for the charities that we support. The retiring collection amounted to the sum of £807.45 which was divided between The Brentwood Catholic Children's Society and our sponsored child, Suhaila. The Collecting Candles raised £881.34 which will be donated to the Children's Society, which helps many children in the UK who, for many reasons, have a very troubled childhood. Thank you all for your tremendous support.

On Tuesday 25th January the children celebrated St. Angela's Day by participating in a Mass conducted by Father Read. St. Angela was the founder of the Ursuline Order of nuns and she is the patron saint of teachers of young people. Urusline schools all over the world mark this special day.
Thank you to everyone who kindly donated to the Royal British Legion by purchasing a poppy. We will let you know in due course how much we raised. Many thanks to Mrs Larrett's Class for their very moving assembly which was held at 11am on the 11th of November. The children were very attentive during this special assembly and during the 2 minutes' silence which the whole school observed.
On the 28th September the children participated in a special Mass to celebrate Harvest time. Father Jacob from the Franciscon Friars travelled from Canning Town to perform the mass and collect all of the wonderful gifts of food, clothing and toiletries donated by the children and their families. These basic necessities were then distributed to the needy and poor of Canning Town. It was a lovely Mass which the children thoroughly enjoyed and were made more aware of all the luxuries they enjoy at home.
Upper Two celebrated the occasion of Easter by re-enacting the Easter Story. The play started with a scene from the Last Supper. The final scenes of the Crucificion and the Ressurrection movingly retold the events as portrayed in the bible. This performance was enjoyed by parents, staff and pupils of the school.
On 11th November 2009, Lower Two gave a very moving and thought-provoking Remembrance Day assembly in which they told the Juniors about the importance of Remembrance Day and the poppies people wear. They also placed particular emphasis on the current war in Afghanistan. Poppies were sold around the school in the preceding weeks.
On Monday 28th September the school celebrated its annual Harvest Festival Mass. Father Emmanuel, from the Franciscan Friars in Canning Town, came to lead our mass, and was very grateful for the many donations of food that the children and parents had made. The Mass was a very special one, with all children from Kindergarten upwards participating with both reverence and enthusiasm.

There exists within the school a long-standing and very successful House System. Every teacher and pupil is allocated to one of the four Houses which are named after the Patron Saints of the British Isles. As well as celebrating the feasts of these Saints the children are awarded House points for good behaviour, hard work and courtesy. Each week the House Cup is presented on behalf of all members to the Captain of the House which has gained the most points.
Various inter-house events take place throughout the year to encourage a competitive spirit, a sense of team work and good sportsmanship. These include events of various kinds, such as Sports Day in the Summer Term, Junior Quiz Night and also the annual Pancake Race! Parents are often invited on these occasions when their presence and support are much appreciated. Each House has a House Captain and Vice Captain who have responsibility for various aspects within the school.
Every teacher in the Ursuline Preparatory School is firmly committed to the idea that positive reinforcement motivates a child to give of his/her best. Consequently, much use is made of praise. House points are awarded for hard work, effort, good behaviour and kindness. Merit Awards are presented to each class in assembly every week. There is a reward system set up for excellent work. In the top Junior Class, children are appointed school officers.
As usual all the Junior children were expected to represent their house for this annual event. There were some great personal achievements and the first three runners home were, Nick Cowen, Thomas Green and Elliot Cordery. St. George were the overall winners. Georgia Knight was the first runner home for the girls in a time of 3.12 minutes and Nick ran in 3.01. These times are being set as the ones to beat for next years event! All the runners are shown below.

The curriculum develops lively, enquiring minds so that each child can realise his/her full potential and learn with interest and enthusiasm. We aim to set high standards through a gentle but firm introduction to school life. The curriculum is varied and wide, and is planned to ensure that children are prepared well for the next stage of their education.
Whilst the school places great emphasis on literacy and numeracy, it also includes I.C.T.,R.E., Music, Science, Physical Education, History, Geography, Art, Computer Studies, Elocution, P.S.H.E., French and Technology in the curriculum.
All the children are offered the opportunity of studying at least two languages, and one or more musical instruments.
Your child’s progress is monitored very carefully throughout the year. If individual help is required to overcome any problems or extend any particular talent or gift this is provided by internal and external specialist staff.
The Curriculum is enhanced by educational workshops.
The children combines a multi-cultural day with St. Patricks Day when they all came to school wearing green clothing. The Year 5 class presented a special assembly which included, Irish Dancing, Stories from Irish History and Irish Songs. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the assembly and at the end of the day they took home Shamrock shaped biscuits which they had baked during the day.

Ursuline Prep children created a colourful scene when they came into school dressed as characters from books for Book Week. All the classes were studying different books and children were dressed according to the book they were reading. A special assembly was held for all the children where costumes were displayed and children told the school about their book. A great effort was made by both parents and children with the costumes and everyone enjoyed the day.
The previous day - again for Book Week the children were visited by John Harris - author and story teller. He took the children in groups and told them stories in a very engaging and animated way. The children listened spellbound to his stories and at the end had an opportunity to ask questions and to buy signed copies of books that he had written, some of which were The Pearl in the Grass, The Geat, The Monster of Crete and Charlie's Key. Please see below some of the wonderful costumes.

Upper One spent a whole day experiencing life as an Ancient Greek citizen. They all came to school dressed in “ chitons “and spent the morning trying out different skills that would have been familiar to Ancient Greek people. These included, pottery making, soap carving, making an oil lamp and the oil with which to burn it, creating potions to cure ailments using herbs and spices, fresco painting and wax tablet making. The children had the opportunity to experience a banquet served by slaves whilst being entertained with dancing, acting, poetry recital and sport and marching skills performed by different groups of children. The day brought to life information that the children had learnt during their history lessons and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Book Week 2010
As part of book week Anthony Lishask, who is a proffessional author, visited the shcool and read some of his books to classes within the school. He told the children that many of his books are inspired by personal experience. The Pre-Prep children read and enacted 'Clickety Clack'.
As part of Book Week the children dressed up as a character from the book that they were reading. There were some fabulous costumes! Below are just a few of the many photographs that were taken on the day.
Maths Theatre Group
In February a Maths Theatre Group visited the School and taught Maths in a very different way! The Wild West Theme covered all different areas of Maths, including Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication and Place value. They encouraged audience participation by singing songs, dancing and Quiz Questions.

The Pre Preparatory and Infant department is led by Mrs I. Parker-Litjens.
Pre-Reception, Reception and Kindergarten make up the Pre-Preparatory Department. They focus on the 6 areas of learning in the Foundation Stage: Personal social and emotional development, Communication, Language and Literacy, Mathematical developments, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creative development and physical development.
Intermediate and Transition work towards the Key Stage 1 SATS which Transition sit in May.
Reception class were delighted when two Upper One girls visited the class to read a story they had written as part of a writing competition. The story which had won first prize for the girls was called, "Humphrey, the Lonely Pink Hippo," and was about a very special birthday party organised by King Lion for all the jungle animals except Humphrey, who had not been invited. The story, however, has a happy ending when Humphrey saves the day after one of the acts planned for the party is too shy to perform. The infants enjoyed listening to the story and looking at the illustrations.

We broadly follow the National Curriculum leading to Key Stage Two tests at the end of Year 6. We provide a wide variety of opportunities in both academic and non-academic areas of school life.

The school recognises the importance of IT in our rapidly changing modern world. In order to prepare our pupils, the school is equipped with an up-to-date computer suite. The children are introduced to this facility at a young age, supporting their learning in a variety of subjects. They benefit from specialist instruction on a weekly basis and are taught how to use the Internet and e-mail facilities safely and wisely.
The younger children use a variety of computer programs and the resourceful ‘My World’ educational series, which enhances their learning and helps them to become confident able computer users. In the Junior School they are taught how to use the ‘Office’ group of programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, which is an invaluable resource for them to begin their secondary education.
In addition, from Kindergarten upwards the classes benefit from Interactive Whiteboards. In the PrePrep School there are also computers in each classroom for the children to use.

The school appreciates that a parent’s working day is often longer than the school day. We have therefore introduced an after school care facility to accommodate those that require this extra time.
The after-school care:
Then they will be allowed to do their homework, watch a DVD or play board games. However, this session will not be a teaching session.
Parents must book a place in advance and only through Mrs. Downes or Ms. Hammond. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis; there are approximately 20 places available. They can be booked half-termly in advance.
Parents will be charged per hour or part of an hour up to a maximum of 2 hours. The cost will be £5 per hour. This will be added to your termly bill.
If parents book a place in advance they must cancel within 24 hours notice or they will be charged for the care.
Parents may request that children join the after-school care after they have finished a club, and will be charged accordingly.

The school curriculum is enhanced by providing children with numerous learning activities outside the classroom. This includes visits to places of interest which are seen by the school as an integral, augmentative part of the curriculum and play an important role in the study programme of each class. In general one or two visits are made termly by every class to a wide variety of venues, both local and further afield.
As part of the celebrations on the Feast of St. Angela (the Founder of the Ursuline Order) and St. Ursula (its Patron), we have a whole-school celebration. Residential trips to the Isle of Wight and France are made by pupils in the top two Junior classes. In addition to trips made by the pupils, presentations are given in the school by visiting speakers representing a broad range of topics and concerns.
The pupils in Year 4 are currently studying Electricty. They went to Tilbury Power Station to find out how this vital power source is created. It was a very informative and educational trip and helped the children in their understanding of this process.

Upper One visited Hyde Hall RHS Gardens near Chelmsford on the 28th September to help them with their understanding of their Science topic for this term – Habitats. In the Education Centre, the children were given activities to complete which furthered their knowledge on animal habitats. Specimens were collected from the extensive gardens and the children also built habitats using materials found on the woodland floor.

The final trip for Upper Two was an exciting assortment of attractions, including the London Eye, House of Commons and Covent Garden. The children were very interested in some of the historical facts they discovered when they visited the House of Westminster. They were also amazed by the size of the House of Commons Chamber which they thought was remarkably small. The highlight of the day for the boys, was the joke shop in Covent Garden!

As part of their History work on the Tudors, Lower Two had a very enjoyable visit to Hampton Court Palace. Mr Larrett accompanied us as our expert guide and we all learnt many interesting facts. An extremely worthwhile visit!
A group of pupils from Upper Two were lucky enough to get the chance to go and see some of the top Tennis players in the world this week at the prestigious Wimbledon Tournament. The weather was kind and the children saw some great matches on Centre and Number One Court. These included the women's semi-final matches which featured Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Sabine Lisicki. They were also fortunate to catch a glimpse of Martina Navratilova, although the children were unsure who she was!
As part of their history studies Upper Two have been studying World War II. They travelled to the Imperial War Museum on the 25th February and toured the many exhibits. In particular, 'The Children's War' gallery and the 1940's house. The class went through 'The Blitz Experience' with their guide, Albert, who was an Air Raid Warden. This was one of the many highlights of the trip - all lying on the floor amongst the rubble in the dark!

THE BEST TRIP EVER!!! This was the opinion of Upper Two when they visited the Chocolate Factory owned by the Maylon-Davies family. Although they really enjoyed tasting all the delicious chocolates, they also learnt a great deal about the chocolate making business and all aspects relating to the packaging and distribution of the finished items. The children were very grateful to the Maylon-Davies family for organising the informative visit and also for the very generous goodie bags!
Please see below a small selection of the photographs taken on this exciting residential trip.

On the 23rd September Upper Two visited the British Museum. In particular they went to the Egyptian rooms in preparation for this topic which they will be studying this year. Dr Angela Moorecroft accompanied the children and guided small groups around the Egyptian Galleries. The children found her very interesting and her input very informative. They saw mummies, artefacts and many sculptures. The children spent much of the afternoon sketching the larger artefacts and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

It was the first time that the Ursuline had taken part in a mixed Netball Tournament. The boys complimented the team and make a significant contribution to the games. The team won every game except against the home team Bancroft, which they drew. As all the final scores were calculated by the judges it was a very tense time as Bancroft had won all their matches too! When the officals finally read out the placement the Ursuline discovered that they had won by a single goal on count back. Both the boys and girls were delighted to take home the winners medals and shield.
The girls from Upper Two played in a High 5 netball match on Wednesday 4th October against Mountnessing Primary School and won 23 -1 ! This is the first time the team played High 5 netball as the rules are different to seven a side netball and players have to follow a rotation system where they play all different positions. Therefore, our shooters were playing in defence and in the centre circle which was very alien to them. The defenders and wing players had to shoot which was quite daunting for some but surprisingly all the girls played extremely well and the results reflects the high standard of netball we have at The Ursuline. Well done to all.

On Tuesday 11th October the boys played a friendly football match against Mountnessing. The game proved to be action packed, with us hitting the cross bar and upright. Unfortunately we were not quite able to equalise and finally lost the game 2-1.

On Saturday 10th September the U2 Netball Team, assisted by 1 pupil from L2 competed in the first Tournament of the season at Chigwell School. Each match lasted for 8 minutes one way. 5 points were awarded for a win, 3 for a draw and 1 point for a loss. The team stormed through the group stage winning against East Court 12 - 0, St. Cedds 6 - 2 and Fairlop 7 - 0. A great start. In the second round the competition became tougher as they met the teams that had also been highly successful in the group stage. The results were as follows.
Bancroft B Won 9 - 2
Chigwell A Won 6 - 4
Forest A Won 4 - 1
Bancroft A Drew 4 - 4
Brentwood A Loss 1 - 4
In total the team scored 19 points which put them in 3rd position. The girls were very proud of their performance, they competed at their best and enjoyed themselves! An excellent start to the season.
Overall the girls displayed fantastic netball skills at all times and worked extremely well as a team. Their spirits were always positive and enthusiastic even through the tough matches. They are looking forward to the rest of the season and hopefully they will remember Miss Peacham's motto, 'PASS' - Power - Accuracy -Speed = Success!!

The Ursuline Football Team made up of boys from U2 and L2 played in the annual Chigwell Football Festival. They played a series of seven games with mixed results. The combined score for the girls and boys was 6 sets each. The U9 Team played first to 10 points. The combined score for the girls and boys was Ursuline 26 New Hall 11. Well done to all those that took part, an excellent result.

The Year 5/6 boys qualified for this event at the Regional part of the competition. The boys had to play five games in the opening rounds and managed to win three, draw one and lose one. We won every match: 11/1; 10 /1; 8 / 3; 8 / 0; 3 / 2 which took us to the semi-finals to meet Widford Lodge. This game was extremely exciting as each goal scored by both teams kept the score level. Unfortunately, we missed 4 crucial goals under pressure and ended up losing 6 -1. All the girls played exceptionally well and were extremely motivated. All children from 3 - 11 take part in the Productions.
Preparations are underway for the bi-annual Theatre Production which will take place on the 28th and 29th June at Towngate Theatre in Basildon. The parts have been decided and the children are already rehearsing. Please click here to view cast list.
The most recent production performed by the school took place on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th 2009 at The Towngate Theatre in Basildon. The children all worked very hard and the play was greatly enjoyed by all.

As part of their History topic, Ancient Greece, the teachers, parents and children of Upper One had a taste of what life was like during this era. The children all changed their names for the day and dressed in costumes of the period. It was both an enjoyable and educational day.

At the Ursuline Prep it was, 'Mum's the Word,' as mothers of the children in the Infant Department were treated to a special Mother's Day Assembley. The children sung, recited poems and read stories that they had written about their mothers. At the end of the assembley all the mums were presented with a flowering plant and hand crafted gifts made by the children. All the mums enjoyed this special occasion where the children showed their appreciation for everything their mothers did for them.

The school was delighted to take delivery of a new 16 seat minibus, kindly donated by Mr Knight, for use by the school to transport children to and from sporting events and other off premises activities. Headteacher, Mrs Wilson, said she was overwhelmed by his generosity and that the new minibus would be a great asset to all pupils and staff.
Don Baker, former Trustee of the Ursuline Preparatory School attended a school assembly where the pupils and staff of the school thanked him for his total dedication and commitment to the school for the past 18 years. Don Baker formed the board of Trustees together with Ian Dury, John Stevens and Pauline Wilson in an attempt to save the school, after The Ursuline Order declared its intention to close the school in 1987.
During that time the school has grown from 58 children, moved to a new building and blossomed to the current situation where the school is totally full and has a long waiting list.
Don Baker played a major role in this success and has given of his time and expertise without hesitation. The past and present pupils and staff are very grateful and we know we will all miss him very much.

To celebrate the season the school organised many events such as the Junior Talent Show and Christmas Party, the 'Christingle' at Brentwood Cathedral and a 'Special Visitor'! The children thoroughly enjoyed all of the celebrations.
On Saturday 13th November the PFA held a fantastic Firework Event. Not only was there a magnificent display but also children, parents, staff and friends enjoyed Carousel Rides, Gluwein and many other activities.
This annual event took place on Saturday 10th July. It is organised and funded by the PFA and is open to all families at UPS. Many families took the opportunity to enjoy a picnic in the School grounds and the children enjoyed the many activities available. Please find below a selection of photographs taken by the PFA.
On the last day of the Easter Term the PFA kindly organised an Easter Egg Hunt for all of the children in the school. The Easter Bunnies and Chicks were there to assist the children, helping them to follow the clues to find some delicious Easter Eggs. Great fun was had by helpers and children. Many thanks to the PFA for all their efforts.
The children all looked fantastic! It was very difficult to select the winners of each class. Many thanks to all parents and children for their tremendous efforts.
This annual event is always welcomed by pupils and parents and this year was no exception. The children presented their mothers with cards and flowers and performed and sang beautifully.

The continuing success of the School is due in no small part to the support given by parents to the School’s aims and traditions.
Parents are encouraged to participate in School life on many occasions including some assemblies and celebratory Masses both in school and at the Cathedral. This participation engenders a closer relationship between parents and teachers.
Although there are parents/teacher interviews when parents can monitor their child’s progress with the class teacher and/or Headteacher, we are happy to discuss a child’s progress at any time by appointment.

Please contact the school office to request a prospectus. Click here for online copy.

I am increasingly impressed by the hard working attitude of the class. They settle very quickly to work and are serious about raising standards so very well done. For the second week they have won all the trophies!
Homework: Pet project please continue to work on the project pupils should be about half way through.
Star gazing Live is on BBC2 tonight 8,30 p,m,
Pratice papers tomorrow. I will send home Pot of Gold for you to review. Generally they are very good . Discussion points:
= divided into fact (something that can be measured/checked independently) and fiction.
- avoid starting sentences with 'and' or ' becaus'e.
- short answers should be in complete sentences. Use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, for names, titles street names, professions Doctor, Judge etc.

To encourage better performance I have shown the number of marks improvement from paper A completed under test conditions and paper C. Most pupils improved by one or two marks some by as much as 6 marks please encourage and discuss why they did better. For those who took a backward step aim to encourage an improvement. Engage your child in the outcome using a 'light touch'. It is easier to praise them if the improvement is modest week on week and more likely to sustain.
Homework
English: Comprehension 'The map of Barford'
R.E. Pupils have a worksheet to complete as extra work. I would like them to discuss the parable with you and end by writing a short prayer of thanks for their many benefits.
Table test were slightly better 8/20 gaining full marks please keep plugging away unless you are sure they know them. We are recapping subtraction this week along with weight and capacity.
Remember weight varies with gravitational pull so you are lighter on the moon heavier on Jupiter. Mass is the total of your atoms and doesn't vary with gravity. Weight is measured in Kilograms and Grammes (1000g = 1Kg) Capacity is the space something takes up in 3D and is measured in litres, cubic centimeters. Imprtial units are pints and galllons. Have fun. All the best bits come back to haunt you!

Homework
Maths: Please do go over the Maths paper this weekend especially those children who were late last night.
Spelling and Tables 2, 5 and 1
Pet projecty
Star gazing this weekend should be quite good for stars.
General children are settling to a strict routine and are responding well. I know it is tough but time is short. Take charge in the evening if your child is too tired then early bed and we can always reschedule the work. However the more they do the more they can do. Try to keep week days free of too many late nights. Expect children to be able to explain their homework in the first instance. That is their responsibility not yours. You provide the space and conditions, support only after they have grappled with the problem. It is the struggle which prepares the brain for learning and, they are more capable than they let on sometimes. Thank you for the feedback it is all useful.
12th January
Maths paper C completed in class marks were not as good as I would like. Please go over incorrect questions and resolve to question pupils everyday on ClockTtimes switching between digital and analogue. Reflective symetry is best practiced with shapes cut out and then draw a line of symetry, fold the shape along the line - if the halves match perfectly then they have reflective symetry. When looking at graphs first examine the scales to find out the value of each division then calculate differences.
The class has now revised basic addition please reinforce learning with simple sums especially when out shopping.

Homework Pet Project please do make a start to the project - little and often is best make notes for the contents index and glossary if included.
English: ' The last noo noo'. An extra task is for pupils to write up their role play in playscript they performed today. The play is about a monster called Marlon who has to give up his dummy, Mummy and Granny are trying to persuade him but Marlon is having none of it.
Maths: Doubling numbers please practice, they were very good today. There will be another practice exam tomorrow so if time go over those common mistakes.

Please continue stargazing the winter constellations in preparation for the Space Day in the summer.
This week we will continue addition preparation. Please help by reinforcing work on breaking up numbers into tens and units and practice doubling and halving numbers. Pupils still don't know 2, 5 and ten times tables only five students get 10/10 so please keep going over these.
Pupils should have;broght home sthe calling tree list. However I noticed one or two had left them in their desks.
Swimming was great please remember googles.

Pet Project: Instructions inside book. Must be at least 8 pages, handed in on 6th February.
Have a good weekend
5th January 2012
Homework: Maths worksheet time and adding. I have marked the maths paper from the holiday and the results were very good clearly many pupils needed some support and that is as it should be at this stage. Perhaps those pupils who struggled would be better to do only tow or three sums a day in the morning. Certainly in class most seem able to cope.
The paper showed that Venn diagramms needed revision. Pupils have to select an item or number for one ot the other category and place them into the right cirlce. If the item can go in both then it is placed in the ovelap. If an item cannot be placed, then it should be placed outside the cirlce.
i.e. Multilpes of 2 included 8 Multiples of 5 included 15, 20 went into the overlap and 11 outside the cirlces.
Fractions are hard but start with 'The group size' i.e. whats the whole then ask what is the fraction at this age a half or a quarter. Reverse the process 'if a quarter is ..... then what is the whole?
English following on from books by the same authors we have been examining book covers and describing them. Ask children to descrbibe book covers using the framework:
What is in the background, mid ground, in the front. Get then to speak in sentences refer to colour text objects, describe in detail then ask what feeling they experience - is it scary, funny, sad, etc. Practicing speaking in sentences, in detail will build confidence and prepare them for writing.
4th January 2012
Good evening sorry it is so late, no doubt children are now in bed. Welcome back to the new term and New Year. Thankyou again for the many gifts it was a delight to be so appreciated after just such a short time.
Feedback Assessments
Maths I have read all the notes regarding the holiday Maths homework and understand parent's anxiety. However at this stage it is important to know what they don't know so that we can address each issue. My experience is that pupils do improve. We will be going over all the topics covered in Year 1 and 2 and each paper will highlight areas for further work. This week we are beginning addition by adding 10s. Iin class most are very quick to pick up - those who aren't are getting extra support. Parents can help by splitting numbers into tens and units e.g. 23 = 2 tens and 3 units. Please continue to practice tables 2, 5 (especially for reading clock time), and 10.
English: The practice paper Wild and Free has been sent home for you to read over generally pupils did well all scoring level 2A or 2B. Retrieving information was good but remind pupils to gather answers from the text not the pictures used as illustrations. When responding to questions on 'feelings' encourage pupils to consider how the character was responding use the following basic framework. Was the character:-
Happy or Sad
Proud or Ashamed
Clalm or Angry
Courageous or Scared
and did the character do the right thing at the right time, if not why?
Homework for Englsih is comparing books by the same author (if possible). We will be working on this for about three weeks exploring various ideas. Please discuss the work, the more pupils express their views the more able they will be to write their views. Encourage comparisons.
14th December 2011
A very happy Christmas to you all, l hope you have received holiday homework. My apologies there is only one Maths paper for you to go over the corrections. This was due to the earlier than expected leaving of Mrs PL. End of term was taken up with assessments and I felt it better to leave paper practice until the New Year. However when you find sums that your child finds difficult just make up a similar one and keep going over them. Please make a list of areas for revision/recap for me to cover. I would expect children to complete the work over a few days I leave it to you to decide when, however please cover a little work prior to return to get brains into work mode.
. 9th December 2011
Congratulations on the Christingle service children were delightful.
Homework Handwriting and phonics. Please continue to practise time 1/4 past and 3/4.
Discussion Points:Next Week pupils will be looking at poetry please prepare them by reciting favourite rhymes. Discuss poetry under three main headings:-
Meanings: How poetry taps or keys into the mind forming images of sounds (rat a tat tat pussy cat) , sight (I wandered lonely as a cloud), smells, emotions etc. Let children give reasons for their favourite rhymes
Language used: Now don't get scared! Adjectives, Nouns, Verbs, Similie (like a rod of iron) Allitieration (Red Ruby Roses Rustled Restlessly), Refrains/Chants (Oh no you won't Oh Yes I will. Have a go at recognising them in the poems
Structure: The way the poem is put together e.g. number of lines in verses, which lines rhyme, is the rhyme the same? Do they alternate? Is there a chorus?
Themes: this week it will be favourite foods so build up descriptions of foods.
I will be at the Eye Clinic on Monday so will be in on Tuesday
Wednesday 7th December
Homework: English Homework books 'Connective'
Discussion points organizing information to make it more memorable for the reader. e.g. breaking text into picture boxes, Text boxes, Charts, tables and maps. Using Headlines, subheadings, flow charts and leaflets. Using colour to anchor meanings and associations. Ask your child about thier flowchart for looking after a pet.

Tuesday 29th November
IMPORTANT Too much time is being wasted because of insufficient equipment. There will be a full equipment check this week. Pupils must have pencil case, coloured pencils, three graphite pencils, ruler, rubber, glue stick. May I have all pencils sharpened before school. Sounds neurotic but it can take up to 10mins for a child to get organised.
Homework History: ICT research find examples of Christmas traditions in other countries. Please find sheet in book bag.
General Maths pupils need to revise teen numbers 10 - 19 and be able to break them down into tens and units e.g. 'what number has one ten and three units; rounding up or down to the nearest 10 (five being the tipping point) e.g. 63 rounds down to 60, 86 rounds up to 90.
Monday 28th November
Homework English: Complete Language and Phonics sheet on Past, Present and future tenses, ordering the alphabet and sorting words alphabetically. Complete comprehension 'Stanley'. Please gather coins for the Christingle Candles (make sure candles are labelled with your child's name).

Week Beginning 28th November
Mrs McNulty signing on for year 2. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns. I feel your children will find the 'transition' fine as I have worked with them in school now for a number of sessions. Mrs P-L enjoyed her last day teaching and will be in School for Christingle rehearsal this week.
Our main focus of learning this week is Time
- Maths: reading the correct time (half past and o'clock), please use every opportunity to support understanding and recognition of the clock face perhaps refer to famous clocks Big Ben, Waterloo Station.
- English Josie Smith comprehension. Language and Phonics will focus on the past tense. Please consolidate the idea of time as Past, Present and Future. Discuss the child's own past and present.
- History: Christmas traditions home and abroad past and present.
- R.E. How the shepherds learned of the birth of Jesus and how they spread the 'Good News' tell the children about their birthday and the good wishes they received.
- Geography we continue with the 'Island Home'
- Science: again continues the theme of time and change looking forward by examining life cycles (Butterfly and and Frogs)
Homework will follow the usual patterns and I will update you regularly.
Please note that after Christmas Transition will be swimming on Mondays! Please meet at Brentwood School at 8.30, the children are in the water at 8.45, and then transported back to school via Mini bus.

We are doing an assembly on conservation as a class next week. This week we have been talking about endangered animals. As a class we thought it would be a good thing to sponsor one. After voting they decided to sponsor the Amur Leopard. The sponsorship costs £30 for one year. We thought it would be a good idea if the children could do a chore or chores to raise the £1.50 required each for their share of the sponsorship (if they raise more thats fantastic, but £1.50 each is the goal). Therefore I would be grateful if you could think of a chore for your child to do this weekend so they can raise their £1.50.
Thanks
