Hats for Haiti 2010

It is with pleasure that through this website I introduce to you the values and life of the Ursuline Preparatory School.
It offers an insight into the life of our community, outlining our aims, standards and ethos. We believe that school and parents should work collaboratively for the good of the children.
However, this website is no substitute for a personal visit and I would welcome the opportunity to meet parents and their children and show them the school at work.
Above all, we are a happy and caring community that strives for excellence in all areas of school life.
I look forward to meeting you.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs P. Wilson (MSc)
HEADTEACHER

Founded in the early 1930s, the school relocated in 1994 to a large Georgian house on the outskirts of Brentwood. In 1994, the role changed and the school became an independent co-educational Catholic School for boys and girls aged 3-11 years.
The Preparatory School became independent from the Ursuline High School in 1994, although the Ursuline ethos and high traditional standards are still maintained.

Our principal aim is to provide the children with a sound Catholic, moral, social and academic education in a disciplined environment. We realise that the children learn most effectively when they are happy and well-motivated.
In order to achieve this, the school creates a happy and caring atmosphere founded on traditional values and fair discipline. We seek to establish the conditions that will allow pupils to achieve their full potential in all areas of school life. The children are also prepared, where appropriate, for scholarship examinations, Common Entrance Examinations and entry to other schools.
The school gives children the necessary competence and self-confidence to broaden and develop their individual skills and interests, both inside and outside the school environment. It also seeks to instil in pupils a sense of pride in self, school and community, to encourage concern for others, especially with the older pupils demonstrating care for the younger children. High standards in dress, speech, work and behaviour are actively promoted.
The progress of each pupil, both academic and personal, is monitored very closely. This assessment of a child’s strengths and developmental needs is made formally and informally on a regular basis. This allows the child’s teacher to develop a clear picture of the areas in which he/she is meeting with success and those in which there are still issues to be addressed. The reading age of each child is tested termly and a summary of progress in the different areas of the curriculum is produced. Parents’ Evenings are held regularly to provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss the contents of these reports and the general development and welfare of the pupil.
Above all, the Ursuline Preparatory School strives for excellence in all aspects of school life.

The School supports numerous charities throughout the year. These include CAFOD, Great Ormond St. Hospital for Sick Children, The Havens Hospice, The Children’s Society, Barnardo’s and the local Women’s Refuge.
The School also sponsers a poor child in Palestine and also supports fifteen children affected by the tsunami in 2005. Money for all these ventures is raised in a number of fun ways including sponsored events, a 20p coin trail and the Christmas and Easter Raffles.
Each Christmas the staff, pupils and friends of the school fill more than 180 shoe boxes with gifts for needy children in Eastern Europe. These boxes are in turn delivered by the charitable organisation Samaritan’s Purse.
We are delighted to announce that a magnificent £900 was raised from the Easter Raffle. A cheque for this amount was given to Great Ormond Street Hospital and we received a lovely letter in return expressing their gratitude and explaining what a difference charitable donations such as these make. Thank you all for your generous support.
Following the terrible disaster that struck Haiti recently, the school held this event where everybody wore a hat of their choice. A tremendous £1000 was raised which has been sent directly to Sister Mary who runs an orphange in Haiti. Thank you all for your very generous support.
A fantastic total of £1,069.10 was raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. Thank you to Mrs Welcome and Miss Welcome for donating the lovely prizes. The Junior class who raised the most amount of money was Lower Two, and in the Infant and Pre-Prep Department it was Pre-Reception. Well done to them, and thank you to everyone who bought tickets to support this worthwhile cause.
On Thursday 22nd October Upper Two took to the stage in a whirl of sequins and bow ties for Strictly Come Upper Two 2009! All the boys and girls paired off to choreograph their versions of a waltz, and rehearsed for weeks leading up to the event. They performed in three groups, with the winners of each group dancing once more in the final before the champions were crowned. The rest of the school paid to watch the show, and all money raised went to the school tsunami fund. It was a brilliant effort by all concerned, and all credit should go to Upper Two for creating such an exciting competition.

The 20p coin trial took place on Manday 12th October to raise money for CAFOD. A magnificent total of £921.80 was raised, which will provide meals for over 4,500 starving children. Well done to all the children, and especially to St Patrick's house for collecting the most money.

The School is a member of the ISA. Please click on the links below for the latest Inspection Reports.

Our principal aim is to provide the children with a sound Catholic, moral, social and academic education in a disciplined environment.
As part of the celebrations on the Feast of St. Angela (the Founder of the Ursuline Order) and St. Ursula (its Patron), we have a whole-school celebration. As a Catholic School we celebrate Masses and other services throughout the year.
These include Harvest mass when the children bring in tinned food and toiletries for those less fortunate than ourselves, St. Ursula’s day when we celebrate the foundation of our school, Mother’s day assembly when the infants put on a display for their mothers, Ash Wednesday, Reconciliation services, the Rosary in May and October, individual class prayer times and the Christingle Service of Light at the Brentwood Cathedral in which the infant classes perform the Nativity play.
As a school we are proud to maintain our links with the Cathedral throughout the year.
At Christmas we go to the Marillac to share carols and readings with the residents and staff.
The school accepts pupils of all religious denominations who support the Catholic ethos of the school.
Upper Two celebrated the occasion of Easter by re-enacting the Easter Story. The play started with a scene from the Last Supper. The final scenes of the Crucificion and the Ressurrection movingly retold the events as portrayed in the bible. This performance was enjoyed by parents, staff and pupils of the school.
On 11th November 2009, Lower Two gave a very moving and thought-provoking Remembrance Day assembly in which they told the Juniors about the importance of Remembrance Day and the poppies people wear. They also placed particular emphasis on the current war in Afghanistan. Poppies were sold around the school in the preceding weeks.
On Monday 28th September the school celebrated its annual Harvest Festival Mass. Father Emmanuel, from the Franciscan Friars in Canning Town, came to lead our mass, and was very grateful for the many donations of food that the children and parents had made. The Mass was a very special one, with all children from Kindergarten upwards participating with both reverence and enthusiasm.

There exists within the school a long-standing and very successful House System. Every teacher and pupil is allocated to one of the four Houses which are named after the Patron Saints of the British Isles. As well as celebrating the feasts of these Saints the children are awarded House points for good behaviour, hard work and courtesy. Each week the House Cup is presented on behalf of all members to the Captain of the House which has gained the most points.
Various inter-house events take place throughout the year to encourage a competitive spirit, a sense of team work and good sportsmanship. These include events of various kinds, such as Sports Day in the Summer Term, Junior Quiz Night and also the annual Pancake Race! Parents are often invited on these occasions when their presence and support are much appreciated. Each House has a House Captain and Vice Captain who have responsibility for various aspects within the school.
Every teacher in the Ursuline Preparatory School is firmly committed to the idea that positive reinforcement motivates a child to give of his/her best. Consequently, much use is made of praise. House points are awarded for hard work, effort, good behaviour and kindness. Merit Awards are presented to each class in assembly every week. There is a reward system set up for excellent work. In the top Junior Class, children are appointed school officers.
Inter House Netball and Football 2010
As the end of the Netball and Football season approaches, this week has seen the Inter-House competition take place for these sports. All children in the Junior School are invited to take part and represent their house.

The curriculum develops lively, enquiring minds so that each child can realise his/her full potential and learn with interest and enthusiasm. We aim to set high standards through a gentle but firm introduction to school life. The curriculum is varied and wide, and is planned to ensure that children are prepared well for the next stage of their education.
Whilst the school places great emphasis on literacy and numeracy, it also includes I.C.T.,R.E., Music, Science, Physical Education, History, Geography, Art, Computer Studies, Elocution, P.S.H.E., French and Technology in the curriculum.
All the children are offered the opportunity of studying at least two languages, and one or more musical instruments.
Your child’s progress is monitored very carefully throughout the year. If individual help is required to overcome any problems or extend any particular talent or gift this is provided by internal and external specialist staff.
The Curriculum is enhanced by educational workshops.
Book Week 2010
As part of book week Anthony Lishask, who is a proffessional author, visited the shcool and read some of his books to classes within the school. He told the children that many of his books are inspired by personal experience. The Pre-Prep children read and enacted 'Clickety Clack'.
As part of Book Week the children dressed up as a character from the book that they were reading. There were some fabulous costumes! Below are just a few of the many photographs that were taken on the day.
Maths Theatre Group
In February a Maths Theatre Group visited the School and taught Maths in a very different way! The Wild West Theme covered all different areas of Maths, including Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication and Place value. They encouraged audience participation by singing songs, dancing and Quiz Questions.

The children are introduced to this facility at a young age, supporting their learning in a variety of subjects. They benefit from specialist instruction on a weekly basis and are taught how to use the Internet and e-mail facilities safely and wisely.
The younger children use a variety of computer programs and the resourceful ‘My World’ educational series, which enhances their learning and helps them to become confident able computer users. In the Junior School they are taught how to use the ‘Office’ group of programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, which is an invaluable resource for them to begin their secondary education.
In addition, from Kindergarten upwards the classes benefit from Interactive Whiteboards. In the PrePrep School there are also computers in each classroom for the children to use.

The school appreciates that a parent’s working day is often longer than the school day. We have therefore introduced an after school care facility to accommodate those that require this extra time.
The after-school care:
Then they will be allowed to do their homework, watch a DVD or play board games. However, this session will not be a teaching session.
Parents must book a place in advance and only through Mrs. Downes or Ms. Hammond. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis; there are approximately 20 places available. They can be booked half-termly in advance.
Parents will be charged per hour or part of an hour up to a maximum of 2 hours. The cost will be £5 per hour. This will be added to your termly bill.
If parents book a place in advance they must cancel within 24 hours notice or they will be charged for the care.
Parents may request that children join the after-school care after they have finished a club, and will be charged accordingly.

The school curriculum is enhanced by providing children with numerous learning activities outside the classroom. This includes visits to places of interest which are seen by the school as an integral, augmentative part of the curriculum and play an important role in the study programme of each class. In general one or two visits are made termly by every class to a wide variety of venues, both local and further afield.
As part of the celebrations on the Feast of St. Angela (the Founder of the Ursuline Order) and St. Ursula (its Patron), we have a whole-school celebration. Residential trips to the Isle of Wight and France are made by pupils in the top two Junior classes. In addition to trips made by the pupils, presentations are given in the school by visiting speakers representing a broad range of topics and concerns.
Wimbledon 2010

Sheila Stein won her Freestyle heat and went on to achieve 2nd place in the final. This allowed her to qualify for the National East Anglia Free Style Relay Team.
As a result of their performances Ben Brennan, Rohna Chopra, Sheila Stein and Mason Wright will represent East Anglia at the National ISA Gala which is to be held in Coventry on 14th November 2009.
Success continued for our Year 5/6 Netball team at the Forest Netball Rally, in which 24 schools took part. In the first round, our girls played 5 other schools, winning all of thier matches, scoring a magnificent total of 21 goals and only conceding 2. Having won this round, our girls went on to play the winners of the other groups, playing Widford Lodge, Chigwell School and Park School. They won every match, scoring 12 goals in total and only conceding 4, making them overall winners.

The Year 5 and 6 girls competed with 24 other teams in the Chigwell Netball Rally. There were four boxes of six teams and all teams played each other. The Ursuline girls were placed in the 1st place in their box, being undefeated. The top team in each box then went through to the the final 'Round Robin' competition. Here they played Woodford Prep, Brentwood Prep and Park School. They won all of these matches and were crowned winners of this prestigious Rally.
On Saturday 26th September the Year 5 and 6 boys competed in the Chigwell Football Tournament, featuring 24 teams from schools in the Essex area. The boys went through to the final 16 after coming 4th in their group. This match went to extra time but the score remained 0 - 0. The winner of this contest was decided following a very tense penalty shoot out which the Ursuliune lost 4 - 3.
The children did really well at the ISA Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Wednesday 24th June.
The results were as follows:
This competition took place in June 2009, and over 16 schools competed. Both the boys team and the girls team did very well.

The School plays an active part in both local and national Music Festivals and competitions.
We have a school choir, music group and a newly formed school band. These groups regularly play at school assemblies and Mass.
School Band: Tuesday 8.30
Music Group: Tuesday 12.00
Choir: Thursday 8.30
We are very fortunate to be able to offer specialist Drama Tuition in addition to Theatre Club which is available to all Upper Junior pupils. The children follow the LAMDA Awards Scheme. Please click here to find out more information.
As part of the curriculum the pupils have weekly music lessons on Tuesdays with Mrs J. Austin, concentrating on creative music, notation, rhythm, styles, instruments and cultures.
On Friday all children have music with Mrs M. Irwin-Parker. From Transition upwards children learn to play the recorder. All children in the Junior School prepare for music examinations which take place three times a year.

The school currently offers individual tuition in Flute, Saxophone, Guitar, Piano and Violin.
Piano is taught by Mrs M Irwin-Parker throughout the week. On Fridays, Flute, Violin and Saxophone are taught by Mrs G. Cook.
Guitar is taught by Mr Parker. Children can learn Piano from Intermediate, Violin, Flute and Guitar from Transition and Saxophone in Lower Two and Upper Two. All children, in the Junior School, who learn instruments in school, perform at our annual music evening in July.

The School enjoys a good reputation for its regular dramatic productions, some of which have taken place at The Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch and The Towngate Theatre in Basildon. Our shows are written by Miss I. Irwin-Parker. Drama club takes place on Thursdays after school.
All children from 3 - 11 take part in the Productions.
The most recent production performed by the school took place on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th 2009 at The Towngate Theatre in Basildon. The children all worked very hard and the play was greatly enjoyed by all.

This annual event took place on Saturday 10th July. It is organised and funded by the PFA and is open to all families at UPS. Many families took the opportunity to enjoy a picnic in the School grounds and the children enjoyed the many activities available. Please find below a selection of photographs taken by the PFA.
On the last day of the Easter Term the PFA kindly organised an Easter Egg Hunt for all of the children in the school. The Easter Bunnies and Chicks were there to assist the children, helping them to follow the clues to find some delicious Easter Eggs. Great fun was had by helpers and children. Many thanks to the PFA for all their efforts.
The children all looked fantastic! It was very difficult to select the winners of each class. Many thanks to all parents and children for their tremendous efforts.
This annual event is always welcomed by pupils and parents and this year was no exception. The children presented their mothers with cards and flowers and performed and sang beautifully.

The continuing success of the School is due in no small part to the support given by parents to the School’s aims and traditions.
Parents are encouraged to participate in School life on many occasions including some assemblies and celebratory Masses both in school and at the Cathedral. This participation engenders a closer relationship between parents and teachers.
Although there are parents/teacher interviews when parents can monitor their child’s progress with the class teacher and/or Headteacher, we are happy to discuss a child’s progress at any time by appointment.

Please contact the school office to request a prospectus. Click here for online copy.

This work has been covered both in Lower and Upper 1, we have covered all this basic sentence work this year as well. It is vital that the children know this work as well as correct use of capital letters and basic punctuation marks. I would be grateful if you could make sure that this is re-inforced at home. Fairy tales: must contain magic, have repetitive refrains, wicked character
Folk tales: share wisdom and experience of ordinary folk, ususally characters are animals
Fables: very brief, few characters, some fantastical and fabulou idea, very clear moral, characters either very very good or very very bad sometimes deceitful.
Myths: stories that explain the origins of natural events and supernatural events. e.g. Greek and Norse myths/ how the sun came into the world
Legends: famous people whose achievements have been embellised over time.
Remember to have the opening 'Once upon a time'.. themes of good/evil; rich\poor; wise/foolish; old and youngmean/genrous; justice/injustice; use threes or sevens; journeys; refrains; characters: tricksters; third child often punished but wins through because of good heart. The structure should have a repeat pattern e.g. three sons, three wishes, three journeys, three tasks to complete. They can have accumulations (think 12 days Christmas)
Settings are fairly general like castles, cottages, forests, different countries to travel.
Have fun designing and writing the story. Please list the features you have deliberately chosen to include. Remember this is meant to be read out loud to an audience so keep it simple for them to remember each section perhaps even including them in the story telling by making appropriate soundsetc.

RESULTS
I am sorry if the bulletin has misled or upset any of the children in U.2. I have a legal obligation to publish my examination results. To be as tactful as possible I only publish numbers. I realise some schools publish individual results whether they are positive or negative. However, I do not want to do this but as I now realise by not doing it this way it can lead to confusion. Due to the Data Protection Act, I am not allowed to know your personal choices. Hence, I just get a list of numerical results and then can ascertain if children have passed the Grammar School exam or not and then publish my results from that criteria.

Homework Half Term
English Literature
Essay: I am David: This is a challenging piece I do not expect a polished piece, a comprehensive first draft only by Monday 25th February. Pupils have been given a worsheet outlining the essay. Remember that it is crucial not to retell the story but to appraise and, compare and contrast the characters from their point of view. There is no right or wrong way, it is the pupils own reflections on the characters and themes of the book that is being examined. However they must include a consideration of older and younger characters. Pupils should start by selecting their three main characters. Use PDQ (Point Development Quote) to begin to shape their argument/point of view do this by making a list of single words that best sum up the character as he/she moves through the story (Point). Group some of the words together e.g. fearful, suspicious, anxious. and ask questions: why, what, where, when and how is the character like this? Use the worksheet to glean different ideas (Development). Select other characters to compare similarities, difference, to compare and contrast, select appropriate phrases to illustrate or back up the point of view. Work this for two more main characters each time exploring a different set of points, themes, or messages. Work out the introduction setting out who and what is to be discussed, try to pose questions about each of the chosen characters to be explained. Finally sketch out a Conclusion a personal view, insights and opinions.
This work is very important. There is a much greater emphasis on 'getting behind the text 'for Key Stage 2 exams and pupils will need to work hard to achieve the very high stadard that is level five. Here we aim for all but a few to achieve level 5 in the Reading test but only those who can apply what has been taught to their writing achieve level five in Writing - the standard is very high. Please monitor results through exam papers set next half term. A high level five Reading with a high level four Writing usually results in an overall Level 5. It is not easy but sets children up well for secondary school.
Maths: Scale Book 5 Exercise 2.6 Questions 1-15. Show full working out for every question as shown in the example.
